The Coliform Vial detection system for Soleris® is a peptone yeast extract base with lactose as the carbon source. The selective agents include bile salts, sodium lauryl sulphate, and other Gram-positive inhibitors. Acidification of the medium due to lactose utilization changes the pH. Bromocresol purple (BCP) is used as the pH indicator. The BCP changes from a purple to a yellow colour as acid is produced from the coliforms’ metabolism.
The BP9 designated-vials are for products with a lower starting pH (e.g., yoghurt). These vials are designed with an increased buffering capacity to accommodate samples in the pH range of 4.6–6.0 without pH adjustment.
