Feed containing ruminant by-product meal can be harmful to cattle as it has been linked to the spread of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). BSE infected meat entering the food chain was then associated with the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) in humans. Following this, the EU banned the use of mammalian meat and bone meal in all farm animal feed. Despite precautions, accidental contamination can occur. Rapid tests for ruminant in meat and bone meal (MBM) and feed can screen samples at 2% in MBM, and 1% in feed and feed supplements.
Reveal® screening kits from Neogen® are extremely easy-to-use and interpret test strips that screen samples against set thresholds.
