Neogen provides contract laboratory services for Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP), Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) and Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP). Shellfish poisoning is caused by a group of toxins elaborated by planktonic algae (dinoflagellates, in most cases) upon which the shellfish feed. The toxins are accumulated and sometimes metabolised by the shellfish.

Quantitative ELISA Analysis
Shellfish are amongst the food groups that are most often associated with Norovirus, which can account for up to 50% of all foodborne outbreaks of gastroenteritis. Neogen’s contract laboratory is able to perform real time RT-PCR testing.
Speciation testing is carried out using qualitative and quantitative PCR-based techniques to identify a range of animal species in raw or cooked products across a wide variety of food and feed matrices.

For other testing timescales, samples should arrive before 10:30am for the date of sample receipt to be considered as day one of analysis.
Sample Size: Minimum sample weight is dictated by the type of tests required. Samples should be of sufficient number for the test to be representative of the batch they were sampled from. Shellfish samples must be delivered fresh on ice or frozen.
