Mycotoxins are a group of naturally occurring toxins produced by moulds or fungi in grain while in the field or during storage. Typically triggered by weather extremes, these toxins can impair human health and cause economic losses in livestock. One mycotoxin, aflatoxin, is considered the most potent carcinogen and is strictly regulated by the FDA and EU legislative limits.

Neogen® offers the most comprehensive range of mycotoxin test kits to detect aflatoxin, as well as aflatoxin M1deoxynivalenol (DON)fumonisinochratoxinT-2/HT-2, and zearalenone, which provide results in minutes while requiring only a minimal amount of training and equipment.

Monitoring for the presence and prevalence of mycotoxins is typically conducted at the point of grain receipt, during storage and prior to shipment. A strong screening programme at the point of receipt can help the manager determine whether to accept the cargo, decline it or route it to a certain production type depending on mycotoxin levels.

In addition to mycotoxin test kits, Neogen also provides mycotoxin reference material (MRM) and proficiency testing programmes that allow customers to evaluate and validate their mycotoxin testing procedures.
